Porch Visits and MORE: Making Personal Connections to Support Student Learning

with Carol Panzer

May 2, 2019
8:30 am - 2:30 pm
at the Southwest Plains Conference Center
810 W. Lark Avenue, Sublette

More than ever before, students, parents, and teachers need to develop and continually reinforce interpersonal relationships.

In the September 2018 Educational Leadership article "You Don't Know Me Like That", Gabriel Benn states, " The absolute, unquestionable, and essentially assumed authority that teachers once possessed is diminishing and being replaced by an authority that has to be earned."

This shift has happened slowly but steadily as students and adults interact more on social media than face to face and gaps in student achievement become more visible. This workshop will explore ways to build positive relationships with students and their families by looking at ways to begin porch visits and student involved conferences.

In addition, ideas from the book Partnering with Parents to Ask the Right Questions will be introduced. Educators know the power good questioning brings to the classroom. This book emphasizes the need for "collaborative engagement" with families and provides steps to build those relationships. Participants will learn and practice ways to empower families as they work with teachers to advocate for students.

Participants will learn ways to begin and support Porch Visits, and Student Involved Conferences, as well as ways to empower families by teaching a simple strategy to improve the questions asked as teachers and families collaborate to support each student.
