Title III Stop Telling Kids to be Quiet

with Carol Panzer

January 15, 2019
8:30 a m - 2:30 pm
at the Southwest Plains Conference Center
810 W. Lark Avenue, Sublette

Does it strike anyone as ironic that teachers often spend the vast majority of the day telling students to be quiet so they can learn and then those same teachers assign 20 words to memorize so that students can improve their vocabularies?

Language acquisition theory emphasizes the trial and error process necessary for language growth. So, when do educators think students will practice academic language if not in school?

Strategies such as Paraphrase Passport, Chalk Board Splash, Three 3s in a Row (all from the book Total Participation Techniques,) Socratic Seminar, Math Talks (not just talking in math), Reciprocal Reading, and ways to teach civil discourse, plus some good ol’ cooperative learning structures like Linkage and Gallery Walks will be discussed and practiced. So, come prepared to be engaged because, to quote Marsha Tate: "Sit and Get Won’t Grow Dendrites! Not yours and not your students!"

P.S Yes, you will hear some ideas from Worksheets Won’t Grow Dendrites!
