Putting Fun into Science Grades K-5

The Next Generation Science Standards are written to emphasize hands-on activities way beyond the recipe science “experiments” of the past. Students are expected to ask questions, make observations, analyze data, design solutions, and MUCH more. How can that be FUN?

In the past year, Southwest Plains consultants have observed close to 2,000 students as they struggle, succeed, and sometimes fail to successfully complete STEAM projects, but their comments at the end of each session are virtually always something like this: That was FUN. When can we do this again? Teachers have commented that the most successful students in these activities are not always the ones you would expect to excel. Truly, you may see an engineer or scientist emerge when textbooks are not the only resources students use to LEARN.
